Davies: We can't afford to lose Barry

12 April 2012

Curtis Davies believes it is crucial Aston Villa keep players of the quality of Liverpool target Gareth Barry in order to help the club "move forward".

Skipper Barry has intimated to Villa manager Martin O'Neill that he wants to make the move to Anfield and taste Champions League football.

Davies said: "He is the captain, he leads by example and the way he plays on the pitch. We can't afford to lose the likes of those players but you never know what happens in football."

He added: "Gareth has been outstanding this last season - an England regular, one of the first names on the team-sheet, so you can't praise him highly enough.

"For our ambitions as a club trying to move forward and getting into Europe, you really want to keep hold of those sort of players to kick on.

"He is a full regular England international and, if he is thinking about going, you might understand the reasons behind it. But as a Villa player myself, I would love him to stay because he is only going to help our club improve."
