Defiant Babayaro bids for Chelsea new deal

Celestine Babayaro has turned down loan moves to Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion to fight for his place at Chelsea.

The Nigeria left-back has made just one Premiership start under Jose Mourinho this season, but is still hopeful of extending his stay at a club he joined seven years ago.

Babayaro is Chelsea's longest-serving player and wants a new contract when his current deal expires in the summer.

He said: "I'm looking forward to playing my 200th game for Chelsea in the next couple of weeks and will definitely stay here until the end of the season. I'm flattered that several clubs are interested in me, but have no wish to leave Chelsea.

"I'm very happy at the club and want to put them into a position where they have to offer me a new contract. If I have to leave in the summer I'll be very sad and would be crazy to go in the middle of a season in which we could win several trophies."

Following Saturday's 4-0 demolition of Norwich at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea remain five points clear of Arsenal.

Jose Mourinho is discounting talk of January signings, including Barcelona star Ronaldinho, as his team don't need anyone.

"At this moment, I don't think anybody is better than us," said coach Mourinho confidently. "If we keep our mental, tactical and physical condition, nobody can stop us."
