Defiant Lara stands alone

Brian Lara fought a lone battle as South Africa's pacemen Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock reduced the West Indies to 214 for nine at the close of play on the first day of the Fifth Test in Jamaica.

Lara hit 81 and withstood the hostile bowling of Pollock, who finished with figures of four for 24, and Donald, four for 47, for almost four hours.

Meanwhile, Internet company CricInfo have been named as the title sponsors of the County Championship after agreeing a one-year deal with the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The sponsorship will begin immediately with the first round of CricInfo Championship matches commencing today.
