Defoe cashes in on his hot run

Leo Spall13 April 2012

Jermain Defoe is in line for a 500 per cent pay rise after scoring 10 goals for West Ham this season.

The 19-year-old striker's basic weekly wage is expected to increase from £3,000 to £18,000 in a new four-year deal.

The England Under-21 international already gets a £3,000 bonus for every goal he scores but is reported to have a clause in his contract which triggers an improved package based on appearances.

West Ham signed Defoe from Charlton's youth academy in controversial circumstances in 1999 with the south London club threatening legal action.

They were ordered to pay a compensation package of up to £1.65 million at tribunal.

Defoe went on loan to Bournemouth last season and scored 19 times, including a run in which he netted in 10 consecutive League matches.
