Defoe says he is not seeking transfer

Jermain Defoe: happy at Spurs

Jermain Defoe today moved to reassure Tottenham fans that he has no plans to leave the club.

The striker has been linked with a move to Chelsea and recently spoke of his desire to play in the Champions League.

But, ahead of Spurs' Carling Cup clash with Liverpool tonight, he said: "I'm happy here and I've said that to my family, close friends and the players. I want to let them all know that I don't want to go anywhere.

"I think we will push on as a club and I'm thoroughly enjoying my football, scoring goals and that's all I need to worry about.

"I've enjoyed my time at Tottenham. The fans are great to me and I love the fans, love the staff and love the players."

Spurs and Defoe's agent are in talks over a new, improved contract.

Meanwhile, Spurs reserve-team coach Clive Allen has paid tribute to Dean Richards following his comeback against Fulham reserves on Monday.

The defender had undergone tests for a suspected brain tumour and was only recently given the go-ahead to continue playing.

Allen said: "I think Deano has got to be praised highly. He's been the ultimate professional.

"Obviously, he has had fears but I spoke to him before the game and asked if he was apprehensive, he said no, he wanted to play and was really looking forward to it. He's a great example for the young players."
