Dernbach eyes regular England place

Jade Dernbach has set his sights on becoming a regular fixture in England's one-day side after a successful start against Sri Lanka.

The Surrey seamer made his ODI debut Tuesday's 110-run victory on his home turf at The Oval, just three days after his Twenty20 bow in Bristol. The initial signs are positive, with Dernbach making the only breakthrough in a nine-wicket defeat on Saturday before returning two for 25 as England started Alastair Cook's one-day captaincy with a commanding win.

"I want to play every game that England play but we have a big squad of fast bowlers - all of whom can do a great job." Dernbach said ahead of Friday's second ODI at Headingley.

"You have the likes of Finny (Steve Finn) and Woakesy (Chris Woakes) sat on the sidelines on Tuesday night and they are both fantastic bowlers. I know I have to stay on top of my game to keep those two out.

"At the moment I'm just taking it game by game. I am new to the squad and the most important thing to me is winning the series. If you are involved in a successful side you are more likely to play so the more games we can win as an England side the more opportunity I will have to keep playing."

Dernbach, the latest South Africa-born player in the England ranks - albeit one who has learned his cricket at Surrey - is well known for his variety and changes of pace, but he also brings a healthy dose of colour to the side.

A vocal presence on the pitch, with a penchant for diamond earrings and extensive tattoos, Dernbach promises to be something of a character.

Asked if he had added any new ink since he was first called up to the England squad as cover in the World Cup, he answered in the affirmative.

"Yes there has been a new one on the left arm, I had a new one done a couple of weeks ago," he said. "It is a pin-up girl. The name is blank for the moment.

"The idea came from World War II planes, I have a real fascination with that sort of time and era - American wartime stuff."
