Double D-Day for Warriors

12 April 2012

Wigan will be hoping for positive results on and off the pitch on Thursday night as they look to maintain their top-four spot in the engage Super League.

Brian Noble's men are aiming to follow up last week's memorable win over Bradford and complete a third victory of the season over Leeds when the Rhinos visit the JJB Stadium.

Of arguably more importance will be the club's appearance in front of a tribunal hearing in Leeds to determine whether punishment for an alleged salary-cap breach should be under last year's rules or the tougher guidelines introduced since.

Wigan were docked two points in August for over-spending in 2005 and have been charged with a repeat offence following an audit of their 2006 accounts.

The Warriors' full hearing will be heard on Monday but on Thursday afternoon a three-man independent panel will decide which set of rules to implement and, if the ruling goes against Wigan, they could be docked up to 12 points if they are subsequently found guilty of a breach.

Wigan will have an unlikely ally in St Helens, their arch rivals who also believe any punishments should be on the 2006 level, a view the Rugby Football League are likely to oppose.

Wigan should know the outcome of the preliminary hearing before kick-off, while Saints and Bradford - who meet in Super League action at Odsal on Friday - will discover their fate sometime after that when they face full hearings.
