Downing ready for Boro return

12 April 2012

Stewart Downing is set to return for Middlesbrough in Saturday`s Premiership clash with Manchester United at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro manager Gareth Southgate decided not to risk bringing the England winger back for the weekend draw at Aston Villa following a groin injury, but is confident he will be available to face the Red Devils.

Southgate said: "Stewart could possibly have played at Villa but I wasn't prepared to take the chance with the injury. It is important I look beyond the short term. He is a valuable asset and I didn't want to play him at Villa Park and lose him for four or five games."

He added: "It is difficult to take that decision with a player of quality - and Stewart was very keen to play. But I think it was the right decision for him. Last year he played in a game for us he shouldn't have played in and missed three months.

"I have to weigh those things up. Looking after his welfare is more important than anything, but Stewart will be available against Manchester United."
