England begin with a win

12 April 2012

England opened their Hockey World Cup campaign in Germany by coming from behind to beat India 3-2.

Peter Nicholson's side missed two penalty strokes in the first period from Ben Hawes and Richard Mantell and fell behind before the break. However, they levelled the scores in the 52nd minute as James Pindall struck following a penalty corner.

England were ahead four minutes later through Simon Mantell, younger brother of Richard. Simon then added England's third in the 64th minute. But India pulled one back three minutes later as England held on.

Nicholson told PA Sport: "It's a great start for us, India are ranked five places above us so we are absolutely delighted with this result."

England take on Korea on Friday, then face their German hosts on Sunday, Holland on Monday and South Africa next Wednesday.
