England’s netballers have set their sights on a first World Cup win on home soil after their heroics at the Games.

Helen Housby scored in the final second to seal victory against red-hot favourites Australia for their first Commonwealth gold in the event.

Now goal keeper Geva Mentor wants to take that winning streak to the World Cup in Liverpool in 2019.

“The belief within this squad has been inspiring,” she said. “I really hope it lifts that profile on the elite level back in the UK.

“To be able to play in our World Cup in our backyard next year and hopefully come away with a great result would cement what we’ve achieved this year.”

For 33-year-old Mentor, the gold was particularly sweet as it was her fifth Commonwealths, where she has experienced so much heateache.

She said: “I’ve been at it for almost 20 years now and to finally be able to get it at my fifth Games when it’s always been eluding me.

I’ve always dreamt that we could go all the way and I think you have to when you’re a sportsperson and that’s why it’s so gutting when you don’t walk away with your achievements.

“We’ve always had the skill and talent but it’s about knowing how to win and knowing how to play those games, play the clock and play the scoreboard. Now the sky’s the limit.”

Scotland’s Callum Hawkins has been released from hospital after collapsing as a result of intensive heat while leading yesterday’s marathon with just a mile and a half to go.
