England respond after early setback

England lost their openers to successive balls but nonetheless made an encouraging start to the fourth one-day international against India at the Wankhede Stadium.

The tourists might have been stopped in their tracks when both Alastair Cook, who had won the toss, and Craig Kieswetter went with the score on 39.

But Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott kept the scoring rate approaching a run-a-ball in a 15-over total of 81 for two.

England's openers began the match by playing out a maiden each. But the tourists, playing for pride from 3-0 down in a series they have therefore already lost, were under way off the 14th ball of the innings when Cook off-drove Praveen Kumar for four.

In R Vinay Kumar's second over Kieswetter was immediately up the wicket to launch a straight six, and added two more boundaries from the remaining five deliveries.

The first of them was technically a chance, Suresh Raina unable to react quickly enough at point to stop or catch a fierce square-cut.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni turned early to R Ashwin, in place of Vinay. The switch did not appear to be working, as Kieswetter took 15 from the first five balls - including a huge six over wide long-on.

But Cook pushed forward and missed the sixth, and was lbw.

England had to start again when Kieswetter also went lbw to the next ball, one from Praveen which kept low from a good length and hit the pad under the knee roll bang on off-stump.

Trott was off the mark with a sweetly-timed extra-cover drive for four first ball off Praveen, though, and Pietersen hit his seventh ball - off the same bowler - for six over long-off.
