England set Spain date

12 April 2012

England have arranged a friendly international against Spain, for February 7 next year.

The match, which will take place at Old Trafford, will see the teams meet in England for the first time since England's 3-0 victory at Villa Park in 2001.

An FA spokesman explained: "We believe Spain will provide very attractive opposition. There are a number of Spanish players now playing in the Barclays Premiership so it will generate a lot of interest within the game and that's why we've chosen Old Trafford to host this match."

The spokesman added: "It is the largest stadium available to us - we had 72,000 fans attend our last game at Old Trafford against Macedonia."

He added: "With Wembley due to open in the new year, this is another opportunity for fans in the north of England to see the team closer to home."

The February friendly will be the 21st senior encounter between the two nations since their first meeting in May 1929 - England edge the battle with 11 victories to Spain's six.
