Latest score:
England 313-5, First innings

Marcus Trescothick completed a superb century to stabilise England's innings after West Indies had hit back with two quick wickets in the second npower Test at Edgbaston.

The Somerset left-hander brought up his seventh Test ton just before tea on the opening day as England reached 204 for three after captain Michael Vaughan had won the toss and elected to bat.

The tourists made two changes after their 210-run defeat at Lord's with pace pair Jermaine Lawson and Corey Collymore replacing Fidel Edwards and Tino Best while England recalled James Anderson at the expense of Simon Jones.

But despite West Indies' changes, they could not stem the run flow during the early stages as Trescothick dominated a 77-run opening stand with Andrew Strauss which was only broken when Lawson was introduced into the attack.

Lawson struck in his fourth over to remove Strauss for 24 when he attempted to drive a wide delivery outside off stump and instead edged behind to wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs.

Before that setback, England had progressed at an impressive rate with the pair hitting 61 runs in the first hour but once Strauss had departed both Trescothick and new batsman Robert Key played more cautiously until lunch.

That changed after the interval with Kent batsman Key, who marked his return to the England Test line-up with a brilliant 221 at Lord's, playing aggressively until left-arm seamer Pedro Collins ended his brief innings of 29.

Key had already claimed two of his four boundaries by late cutting through the gully and point areas but when he tried for a third time, he mistimed the shot and instead picked out Brian Lara at first slip.

Just seven overs later West Indies continued their fightback with all-rounder Dwayne Bravo halting Vaughan, still fresh from his century in both innings at Lord's, after the England captain pushed forward and gave a comfortable return catch.

But Surrey left-hander Graham Thorpe steadied the innings and Trescothick reached three figures when he cut off-spinner Omari Banks for his 19th boundary to earn the applause of an enthusiastic Birmingham crowd.
