England vs Bangladesh Update

14 April 2012

Latest score:

England 60-0 (9.3 overs)

Bangladesh 190 (45.2 overs)

Bangladesh's woes continued at the Brit Oval today as wickets tumbled in the NatWest Series opener.

Just as in the 2-0 Test defeat to England, the top order toppled as Jon Lewis claimed three wickets on debut and Steve Harmison accounted for another four.

Gloucestershire seamer Lewis, 29, struck twice in as many deliveries and again following a rain break after Michael Vaughan won the toss on a gloomy day in London.

Handed the new ball alongside veteran Darren Gough, Lewis pinned Javed Omar leg before by maintaining a full length and followed up by enticing an edge from Mohammad Ashraful which flew to second slip where Andrew Flintoff pouched an easy catch.

He was denied a hat-trick when Nafees Iqbal drove confidently down the ground and the heavy drizzle which swirled around the ground eventually forced the players off after half-an-hour with the Bangladeshis 31 for two.

But it was not long before his third arrived as Nafees Iqbal was lured forward to nick behind, following a quarter-of-an-hour stoppage.

Another stoppage shortly before midday preceded Harmison's burst of three for eight in 17 deliveries which reduced Bangladesh, who came into this contest on the back of their maiden tour win over Worcestershire, to 76 for six.

One-day specialist Tushar Imran chopped a short ball into off-stump, captain Habibul Bashar flashed boundaries square on either side of the wicket before being held at full stretch by wicketkeeper Geraint Jones, who soon had his third dismissal of the innings when Khaled Mashud gloved down the leg side.

A riposte was provided by left-hander Mohammad Rafique who greeted Paul Collingwood, operating from the Vauxhall end, by depositing the ball into the crowd at long-on.

Andrew Strauss was scheduled to return to opening duties for the limited-overs opener of the summer, having done so only once before in his 29 previous one-day international appearances, his debut in Sri Lanka in November 2003.

But the failed experiment of Geraint Jones going in first has been aborted following the seven-match campaign in South Africa and Saturday's warm-up encounter with Hampshire.

Winter hero Kevin Pietersen, who struck three hundreds in his South African homeland, was making his maiden limited-overs appearance in this country after his man-of-the-match display in the Twenty20 thrashing of Australia.

Strauss' opening partner Marcus Trescothick won his 100th ODI cap while Vikram Solanki was retained in the side which meant England went into another game without a frontline spinner.

Lewis' inclusion came with Welshman Simon Jones struggling with soreness in his right knee, initially incurred last week.
