Geva Mentor believes England’s third-place finish at the World Cup can be a turning point for netball in the UK.

Tracey Neville’s side claimed the bronze medal in Liverpool on Sunday after beating South Africa 58-42.

England had been tipped as possible winners for the first time and the squad admitted they were gunning for gold as hosts.

In the end, the Roses fell just short, but Mentor (above, left), who was playing in her fifth World Cup, believes this is still a turning point for the sport here.

“I’ve never been a part of something like this before,” said the 34-year-old.

“It was important after winning Commonwealth Games gold last year that we continued [improving]. We didn’t just want it to be a one-off.

“I think this has to have a positive effect [on netball in England]. So many people are talking about it and so many people are getting involved.

“After the Gold Coast last year, we really wanted to make sure we were consistent and kept the sport in a good light. I think what we’ve managed to do throughout this tournament.”
