How qualifying works

Portugal qualified automatically for the 16-team finals which will take place from 12 June to 4 July 2004.

The remaining 50 countries were placed in 10 groups of five. There will be 10 match dates for each group between September 2002 and October 2003.

Each country has been given 60 days from today to reach agreement with the other teams in their group about when those matches should be played. If they cannot reach agreement then matches will take place according to a standard list drawn up by UEFA.

The 10 group winners will qualify directly. The 10 group runners-up will be drawn in five pairs and will take part in playoffs on a home and away basis in November 2003.
