Everton send messages of support to Yobo after his brother's kidnapping

Everton have sent messages of support to Joseph Yobo after his brother was kidnapped at gunpoint in Nigeria. Norum Yobo was abducted on his way home from a nightclub in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and it is thought a ransom demand could follow.

Everton's 27-year old defender, Yobo, was due to return from a holiday in Lagos this week but has been given extended leave to be with his family.

'We have contacted Joseph and offered him any assistance he needs,' said Everton spokesman Ian Ross. 'All our thoughts are with him and his family.'

Norum was one of three men taken from their car in the early hours of the morning as they drove home. The other two were later released, and police are now waiting for the kidnappers to make contact.

Atletico Madrid are maintaining an interest in Mikel Arteta that was first revealed in Sportsmail at the end of last season but have yet to follow up with a firm bid, despite suggestions in Spain that a £12.5million offer had been lodged.

Everton have received several enquiries about Andy Johnson's availability, but manager David Moyes is reluctant to sell his £8.6million striker.

Sportsmail revealed last month that Sunderland, Wigan and Fulham have all expressed strong interest.
