Exit door looms as Rebrov is humbled

Sergei Rebrov appears to have kicked his last ball for Tottenham Hotspur.

The ? 11million Ukraine striker was substituted in humiliating fashion by Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle on Saturday, after entering the game only as a half-time substitute.

Hoddle, speaking after a tiresome 1-1 draw at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday that served only to highlight his side's deficiencies, stopped short of handing Rebrov any assurances.

He said: 'I can't really comment on that other than to say that Sergei remains a valued member of my squad at the moment. I took him off because we needed an extra option up front for the final few minutes.'

It would appear that Rebrov will soon be on his way out of White Hart Lane - if Tottenham can sell him. A replacement for the injured Steffen Iversen, Rebrov was presented with the chance of the game in the 70th minute and fluffed it in a manner befitting a nervous schoolboy.

That would have secured the points for Spurs - leading at the time through Iversen's eighth-minute goal - and to make matters worse for Rebrov, Ben Thatcher's mistake a minute later allowed Dean Holdsworth to earn Bolton a well-deserved point with his first Premiership goal since August.

'We are not blaming Sergei,' said his replacement Gary Doherty. 'I think the ball took a bobble before he hit it.'

Hoddle maintained that his team had played some ' beautiful football'. Maybe he was watching a different game. This was a scrappy affair that Spurs dominated for long periods but that saw Bolton finish strongly.

Michael Ricketts was denied a winner by an offside flag while Youri Djorkaeff floated a late free-kick on to the crossbar. Bolton boss Sam Allardyce may not admit it but knows he is almost assured another season in the Premiership.
