Ex-Test star in double tragedy

13 April 2012

Former Australian Test cricketer Sam Loxton is in mourning after his wife drowned and his son was killed in a shark attack on the same day.

Loxton, 80, a member of the unbeaten 1948 Ashes touring team and long-time national selector, has been devastated by the tragedies.

His wife Joan was found floating in the swimming pool at the family's Gold Coast home at 2.15pm on Tuesday.

Approximately 15 minutes later, his 47-year-old son Michael died after losing his left leg when attacked by a six-metre shark in shallow water off the Fijian island of Taveuni.

Loxton's relatives have gathered at the family home to support the man who played in same 1948 Test side as Sir Donald Bradman and Neil Harvey.
