Fans' cheers are music to Terry's ears

Moving forward: John Terry hopes victory has got England supporters back on their side

John Terry hopes the victory over Croatia has won over the fans and urged the nation to unite behind the team as England try to qualify for the World Cup.

England supporters have become increasingly frustrated at the team's struggle to compete at the highest level and have regularly turned on the players, particularly in matches at Wembley.

But the 3,000-strong travelling support were full of cheer last night and gave their side a standing ovation as they walked to the dressing room after the match.

Terry said: "It's great to hear the fans clapping and screaming, hopefully we have got them back on our side.

"We can all move forward together. We never doubted ourselves, we all knew we could do it. We can all start believing again, the players and the fans, but we have to be as one.

"Everyone who was here and at home watching on TV can be really encouraged. I have not seen the dressing room like that for a long time."

David Beckham's England future may again be called into question following the sensational display of Theo Walcott in his position on the right side of midfield, but

Terry insists he still has a lot to offer and must stay involved.

He added: "Before the game Becks had his arm around Theo and was giving him little bits of advice and it was great to see. That's what Becks brings.

"He didn't get his head down because he was on the bench, he was telling Theo things and helping him."

But Terry also urged supporters not to put Walcott under too much pressure with the weight of expectation following his heroic hat-trick performance.

He said: "I think the hype he had at the last World Cup got a bit too much and we have to be careful. Let's not get carried away."
