Fans in fight for future of Broncos

London Broncos stage their own version of Custer's Last Stand tomorrow night when they face Halifax in the Tetley's Super League in their final match at The Valley.

With options for a new venue in London running out, the fear is that after 21 years and more than a dozen homes as Fulham, London Crusaders and London Broncos this could be their last game in the capital.

Nic Cartwright, the club's commercial director, said: "We are doing our utmost to keep Broncos in London. We've made approaches to Orient and Millwall, in fact to every stadium in London. If Nigel Wray (Saracens) or Chris Wright (London Wasps) want to step in we're ready to listen.

"We'll try to keep the club in south-east London where we have set up our roots, but if there was an offer to play at say Watford we would have to consider it.

"I'm confident we are going to end up with a package to keep top-flight rugby league in London. I just can't say where, today."

London's New Zealand star Richie Barnett has urged all Broncos fans to be at Charlton tomorrow. The match kicks off at 6pm and before the game there will be a meeting of fans in the Floyd Bar at The Valley to discuss the club's plight.

A statement from the supporters said: "The club have suffered greatly from their nomadic existence which has made it almost impossible to build from a solid base of the local community. There is a committed base of around 2,000 London fans who are prepared to stand up and fight for the future of this club and this game outside of the heartlands of rugby league.

"We will be having meetings to prepare an initiative whereby the supporters can take more of an active role in the running and survival of this club. This initiative will take the form of financial support as well as moral."
