Federer battles past Andre

Roger Federer saved two match points on the way to a 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 win over Andre Agassi to keep alive his faint hopes of finishing the year as world No1.

The Wimbledon champion arrived at the season-ending event, the Masters Cup in Houston, with a slim chance of becoming the first person from Switzerland to finish the year ranked No1 and remains a long shot despite beating Agassi in their group match.

Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero disappointed in his 6-3, 6-1 group-stage defeat to David Nalbandian, of Argentina.
