Federer cruises through

12 April 2012

Roger Federer made light work of a determined effort by Olympic champion Nicolas Massu of Chile with a 6-3 6-2 win in the Madrid Masters.

The top-seeded Federer eased past Massu, breaking him three times and saving all three of the break points he faced on his own serve.

"I think I played the big points better than he did, it made it easier for myself," Federer said. "Of course, the match could have turned out much harder. (A score of) 6-3, 6-2 is the perfect result for the first round."

Robin Soderling and Juan Carlos Ferrero meet Wednesday for the right to face Federer in the third round.

Sixth-seeded Andy Roddick, currently fourth in the race for a place in next month's Tennis Masters Cup, also reached the round of 16 with with a 6-4 7-6 win over France's Sebastien Grosjean.

With coach Jimmy Connors looking on, Roddick's ninth ace sealed his eighth successive win over Grosjean, who never managed to force a break point.

Toward the end of the match, Roddick - who struck 34 winners - showed some signs of pain in his legs. But he insisted afterward that it was just the wear and tear of a long season and nothing to worry about.

"My knees are hurting a bit, it's just a bit of tendinitis, nothing serious," said Roddick, who awaits either Tomas Berdych or Agustin Calleri. "At the end of the year after a long schedule, you have your good days and your bad days."
