Ferreira remaining cautious

12 April 2012

Portugal defender Paulo Ferreira insists he is not yet thinking any further ahead than the group phase after helping his team beat Turkey 2-0 in their Euro 2008 opener on Saturday evening.

The triumph sees Portugal move top of Group A on goal difference from Czech Republic, who earlier edged past co-hosts Switzerland 1-0 in Basle.

"Unfortunately for us we didn't score more, but we'll just carry on," said the Chelsea right-back.

Second-half goals from Pepe and substitute Raul Meireles did the job for Luiz Felipe Scolari's team at the Stade de Geneve, and in truth it could have been more comprehensive with the Euro 2004 finalists hitting the woodwork three times.

Despite the near misses - from a Cristiano Ronaldo first-half free-kick and then two efforts from captain Nuno Gomes after the interval - Ferreira was satisfied with Portugal's victory.

He added: "I think in the second half we did very well and the goals came naturally so we're very happy."

Next up for Portugal is Wednesday's clash with the Czechs which is likely to determine who will secure top spot in the pool.

"Now we just have to start studying the Czech Republic and we know that will be very difficult like this one," Ferreira continued.

"Of course we want to get a good result as well and if we get a good result maybe we can get to the next stage.

"We have wonderful teams here who can win as well so we just have to think game by game," he said. "Our first objective is to get past the group phase and after that anything can happen."
