Fisichella to join Renault

13 April 2012

Giancarlo Fisichella is to leave Sauber and join Spaniard Fernando Alonso in the Renault Formula One team for 2005.

The 30-year-old Italian will replace Jarno Trulli, who announced at Sunday's German Grand Prix he would be leaving at the end of the season.

Trulli, the only driver other than world champion Michael Schumacher to have won a race this season, is expected to join Toyota.

Fisichella made his Formula One debut in 1996 with Minardi and won his first Grand Prix with Jordan last year in Brazil.

Renault managing director Flavio Briatore said today: "I am confident that Fernando and Giancarlo are the drivers we need to achieve our goal of winning the world championship in the coming seasons."

Williams have announced Australian Mark Webber will join them from Jaguar for 2005.
