Fitness scare for Harmison

12 April 2012

Steve Harmison is being treated for lower back problems and could be doubtful for England's first warm-up match ahead of their Test series against New Zealand.

As one of five Test specialists with the squad, Harmison would have been assured a run-out in the two-day match against an invitational side starting in Dunedin on Monday.

But the Durham fast bowler is suffering from soreness in his lower back - a condition which often affects him at the start of tours - and is receiving treatment on his complaint.

Monday's match is followed by a three-day game against Otago starting on Thursday.

That will be England's last meaningful practice before the start of the Test series and they would want Harmison to feature in that game if he is passed fit.

Hampshire fast bowler Chris Tremlett, who did not play in any of England's matches during the one-day part of the tour, has also picked up a slight side strain.

He was given the all-clear after going for a precautionary scan today and has been added to England's Test squad until the start of the opening Test in Hamilton on March 5.
