Fitzgerald kicks Oxford to glory

Chris Jones13 April 2012

Seb Fitzgerald kicked three penalties to give Oxford University a 9-6 win over Cambridge and their first hat-trick of Varsity Match wins for 30 years.

The outside- half 's contribution in front of 50,000 fans at Twickenham clinched a dreadful match which was the first tryless clash between the teams since 1981.

It was also the lowest scoring game since the 7-6 Oxford win in 1985.

Oxford were stronger at the start and finish of a match that only saw glimpses of back-line play. Cambridge's Sam Howard kicked two penalties but missed a long-range effort near the end.

Oxford received the MMC Trophy which replaced the traditional Bowring Bowl.
