Five going for gold in Barcelona

13 April 2012
Dwain Chambers (100m)

Chambers, 32, has won European gold over 100m before - Munich in 2002 - but was later stripped of the title after admitting to doping throughout that year.

These are his fourth European Championships and his last realistic chance of claiming gold but he might not be able to match Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre, who has been timed at 9.98secs this season. Final: tomorrow, 8.45pm

Lisa Dobriskey (1500m)

Her season may have been blighted by a back injury but the 26-year-old World Championships silver medallist appears to be returning to her best form at just the right time.

She ran a season's best of just under four minutes in Paris earlier this month but must outrace the quickest woman over the distance in the world this year, Russia's Anna Alminova, to win gold. Final: Sunday, 8.15pm

Mo Farah (5,000m and 10,000m)

The first medal up for grabs is the 10,000m tonight and Farah has recorded the quickest time by a European over the distance this year.

His closest challenger is 34 seconds slower. Should the 27-year-old have the legs, he will double up and go for gold again at the weekend. 10,000m final: tonight, 8.05pm, 5,000m final: Saturday, 8.20pm

Dai Greene (400m hurdles)

It would be something of a shock if Greene, 24, did not win gold over the longer hurdle distance. He boasts the five fastest times by a European this season, the quickest of which was 48.49secs. His closest rival on paper, France's Fadil Bellaabouss, is about half a second slower. Final: Saturday, 7.10pm

Phillips Idowu (triple jump)

Idowu has twice competed at the European Championships and only once gone beyond 17metres.

On both occasions, he finished a disappointing fifth and the 31-year-old will be keen to win his first European outdoor medal.

The absence of Olympic champion Christian Olsson is a boost but France's Teddy Tamgho, who jumped 17.98m in New York earlier this summer, is a major threat should he fully recover from his calf muscle injury. Final: Thursday, 6.40pm
