Fondmort critically ill after injury

Cheltenham favourite: Fondmort
14 April 2012

Fondmort, topweight for Saturday's Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham, is fighting for his life after breaking his pelvis on the gallops.

Nicky Henderson's 10-year-old pulled up distressed after completing a routine final workout.

He was transferred by horse ambulance to the nearby animal hospital in Lambourn where he received blood transfusions.

Henderson said: "He had a wobbly time this afternoon but he's stabilised better again this evening. It's going to be a long night and a long few days as well, I fear.

"One of his internal bones must have ruptured a vein because he lost a lot of blood. One of my other horses is standing by to provide transfusions.

"Most horses wouldn't have got this far but his strength and character is fantastic and he is sensible enough to stand still."
