Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a hairline fracture of his left fibula, the latest in a long line of injury setbacks.

The 25-year-old has been plagued with fitness issues throughout this career, but looked to have put the worst behind him while on loan at Bournemouth having made the most Premier League appearances during a campaign in six years.

However, after colliding with Harry Kane problem during Bournemouth's 4-0 defeat to Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Saturday, subsequent scans have confirmed a recurrence of the worst injury of his career which sidelined him for eight months.

An Arsenal statement read: "We can confirm that Jack Wilshere has suffered a fractured left fibula.

"It is hoped that Jack will be fit for the start of next season. Everyone at the club wishes Jack a speedy recovery."

Arsenal may be hopeful Wilshere will be fit enough to return to training ahead of the 2017-18 campaign but a similar injury only recently kept the midfielder out for far longer.

Wilshere also suffered a hairline fracture of his left fibula in August 2015 and spent eight months on the sidelines before finally returning to Arsene Wenger's first-team fold almost exactly a year ago.

In total, Wilshere first fibula fracture saw him sidelined for 247 days, missing a total of 47 games for Arsenal. A similar spell on the sidelines would rule him out until December 2017, a matter of days before he enters the final six months of his current contract.

Eddie Howe has spoken highly of Wilshere during his spell on the South Coast and has wished the midfielder, whose contract at Emirates Stadium expires next summer, well for the future.

“We have loved working with him since he arrived at the club last August," said the Bournemouth boss.

"He has made a huge contribution to our season, both on and off the pitch.

"We wish him a quick recovery and thank him for his effort and professionalism while he was with us.”
