Alexis Sanchez will miss Arsenal's tour of the United States but Arsene Wenger has moved to reassure fans as the star continues his recovery.

The 27-year-old suffered a swollen ankle in the early stages of Chile's Copa America victory over Argentina earlier this month.

The initial images will have alarmed Arsenal supporters just weeks ahead of the new season and, though the injury has since eased, Wenger is not willing to take any risks with three weeks until the start of the new season.

The Gunners RC Lens onFriday night and will now travel to America for pre-season fixtures against MLS All-STras, Chivas de Guadalajara and Viking FK.

But the Arsenal boss is not willing to rush Sanchez back to training for the tour.

The Frenchman said: “Alexis will not go [to the States] because he had an ankle injury. That is not too bad but I will leave him behind.”

The north Londoners will also be without a handful of players who reached the latter stages of Euro 2016, while Gabriel remains in London with a virus.

Wenger added: “The players who won’t make it are the players who went very far in the European Championship, such as Ramsey, Ozil, Giroud and Koscielny.

“I left Gabriel behind today because he has tonsillitis and is infected. He cannot travel."
