Andre Marriner to referee Crystal Palace vs Liverpool again after Christian Benteke penalty controversy last season

Andre Marriner will be in charge of Crystal Palace’s home match with Liverpool, less than eight months after he refereed the same fixture in contentious fashion.

Controversy raged after the March 6 match over Marriner’s decision to award a penalty to then-Liverpool striker Christian Benteke, now Palace’s record signing, with Alan Pardew throwing his coat to the ground in response.

It was the input of assistant referee Scott Ledger, who will not be part of the officiating team, that particularly incensed the Palace manager, who claimed that Benteke had dived to win a penalty he converted in stoppage time, turning a 1-0 lead for the hosts into a 2-1 defeat.

“I saw the referee, he wasn’t giving it,” Pardew said at the time. “That touch doesn’t warrant the dive he makes – and it’s the dive that makes the linesman’s mind up.”

Palace face high-flying Liverpool with momentum having stalled at Selhurst Park in recent weeks. Back-to-back defeats to West Ham and Leicester have seen the south London side slip out of the Premier League top 10.
