Antonio Conte: No scheduling excuses for Manchester United if they lose to Chelsea

Simon Johnson13 March 2017

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte believes Manchester United cannot use the timing of Monday's FA Cup tie as an excuse should they lose.

The quarter-final at Stamford Bridge takes place just four days after Jose Mourinho's side played FC Rostov in Russia, with the second leg of their Europa League last-16 taking place at Old Trafford on Thursday.

But Conte sees no reason for United to complain due to the level of talent Mourinho has to pick from.

“I don't know (if it's more difficult for them)," the Italian said. "We could have played Sunday or Saturday, if (the Football Association) decided it. But we are playing on Monday.

"I think that (the FA) showed great respect for Manchester United to play the last day available for the FA Cup.

“I don't think (Mourinho will rest players). They have had four days to recover and this game is an important one for us, for them.

"I think their formation will be very good. Also because along with Manchester City, Manchester United have the best squad in this league."

Asked why he felt United had a better group than Chelsea despite a huge 17-point gap between them in the League table, Conte explained: “It is due to the number of quality players in their squad."

Fringe players like club captain John Terry, Kurt Zouma and youngsters Nathan Ake, Nathaniel Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been favoured in the FA Cup thus far.

But Conte insists selection policy is not set in stone and hinted he could return to the first-choice line-up against Mourinho's side.

He added: "Did I guarantee players would play in the FA Cup? No. I didn't promise anything to anyone.

"It's a top competition for all so, for this reason, I want to make the best decision for the game against United.

"We didn't play during the week. We had to play Monday (against West Ham last week), Monday again (against United) and then we play on Saturday (against Stoke).

"I don't see the necessity to rest people. Also because, I repeat, Manchester United will do the same (not rest people) against us.”
