Antonio Conte has delivered a withering assessment of Tottenham’s chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
After a promising start under his stewardship, Spurs have been derailed in their pursuit to break into the top four following consecutive losses at the hands of Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Currently, they sit eighth and seven points off of Manchester United in fourth spot, albeit Spurs do boast three games in hand.
Still, the manner of their performances over the last week do point to major problems in the team and Conte has frequently spoken about the need to raise the level after drifting under a number of managers since the glory days of the Mauricio Pochettino era.
“In the past I always say I have to feel only one per cent the possibility to win the league,” he told beIN Sports.
“For sure here the situation is strange because maybe I feel the one per cent possibility to have the ambition to finish fourth.
“The situation is different because the level of this league is very high and there is not a lot of space in this moment for other teams than the top teams.
“For this reason and because the level is high and you know every single team want to improve.
“Not only Tottenham but Arsenal, Leicester, West Ham, Aston Villa and Newcastle. Also teams like Brighton and Wolverhampton.
“They all want to improve and at the moment we have to fight with these teams and not the top teams.”
