Antonio Valencia apologises for liking Instagram message calling for Manchester United to sack Jose Mourinho

Antonio Valencia has been forced to apologise for liking an Instagram post that called for Jose Mourinho to be sacked.

The Manchester United captain insisted it was an accident - but the incident is the latest evidence of the turmoil at Old Trafford.

It also came after the players attempted to put on a very public show of unity in the face of mounting pressure on Mourinho by gathering in a huddle before kick off against Valencia on Tuesday night.

Following the goalless draw one fan posted: “I always look forward to our games, but recently Mourinho has made watching us a punishment.

“It’s time for Mourinho to go.”

Valencia ‘liked’ it - but on Wednesday morning was quick to insist he had done so in error.

The Ecuador international Tweeted: “Yesterday, I liked a post on Instagram without reading the text that accompanied the picture. These are not my views and I apologise for this.

“I am fully supportive of the manager and my teammates. We are all giving our everything to improve the results.”

Valencia is said to be the latest United player to have fallen foul of Mourinho, who has turned on Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata in the face of the crisis at United.

He was dropped for Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham, but restored as captain for the Champions League tie with Valencia.

Afterwards the right back denied any rift with his manager, saying: “I have never had any problems with anyone, thanks be to God!

“The decision is up to the manager and you’ve got to respect it.

“I can say that in the dressing room, the guys are calm and everyone is working hard every day with the right attitude.

“People are saying things because we’ve not necessarily got results, but everything is good, there’s not a problem.

“Everything will calm down when we get some wins. We are 100 per cent behind the manager.”
