Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus played 90 minutes for Brazil on his return from injury in their bad-tempered 1-0 defeat to Argentina.

Arsenal had been concerned about Jesus being rushed back into action but the striker joined up with Brazil last week and started their World Cup qualifier against Argentina on Tuesday night.

He appeared to come through the match unscathed and is now due to fly back to London and return to Arsenal ahead of their game against Brentford on Saturday.

Arsenal will assess Jesus on his return and Mikel Arteta will then make a decision on his involvement at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Gunners have been in regular contact with Brazil, whose head coach Fernando Diniz insisted they would treat Jesus “carefully”.

Jesus has started just four Premier League games this season and had a knee issue in the summer, which required surgery.

In his absence, Leandro Trossard started through the middle for Arsenal in their 3-1 win against Burnley before the international break.

Eddie Nketiah was left out of the England squad and has been training at Arsenal, so should be fresh for the Brentford game.

Brazil’s defeat to Argentina was marred by trouble as Brazilian police clashed with Argentinian fans before kick-off at the Maracana.
