Arsenal hopeful over new triple injury boost for Newcastle clash

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners could be significantly boosted in their attempts to cut Liverpool’s title lead

Arsenal are hoping to welcome Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Thomas Partey back into Mikel Arteta’s squad for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle.

Ghana midfielder Partey has been out since October with a thigh injury, while first-choice striker Jesus has been troubled by a knee issue since last month.

Versatile full-back Zinchenko has a calf problem, but the trio are all due to be assessed after training on Friday afternoon in the hope that they could boost Arsenal’s bench for a key game at the Emirates Stadium this weekend.

“Obviously he (Partey) has been out for many, many months now and we need to really nail the timing, and when he has enough in the tank to compete,” said Arteta. “But I think he is very close.

“Same with Gabi [Jesus] as well. He has done a few things. And Alex [Zinchenko] is not far too.

“Obviously we have missed some big players and we still are. We want them back, we need them back and we need them as quick as possible.”

However, Arsenal will not have Takehiro Tomiyasu back against Newcastle, with Arteta confirming that the defender has a little bit further to go before fully shaking off a knock sustained on Asian Cup duty with Japan.

Fabio Vieira was on the bench against former club Porto in the Champions League in midweek after undergoing groin surgery in November.

Arsenal have been without summer signing Jurrien Timber since he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury on his debut back in August.

However, the Dutch defender is set to step up his rehabilitation in the coming weeks and Arteta is hopeful that he will return to action before the end of the season.

“I really hope so,” Arteta said. “He’s doing really well. He’s been with some players on the pitch. He’s going to do some bits with us on the pitch in the coming week. Hopefully the answer will be yes.”
