Arsenal player ratings vs Newcastle: Jorginho repays Mikel Arteta faith as Martin Odegaard dominates hosts

Arsenal closed the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City to one point by beating Newcastle.

The Gunners took the lead in the first half through Martin Odegaard and should have doubled their advantage through Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

They eventually got their second when Fabian Schar put the ball into his own net from Martinelli in the second half.

The win means Arsenal are now one point behind League leaders City, however Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand.

Aaron Ramsdale 8

Made a good save in the first-half to deny Joe Willock, but even better one after the break to keep out Fabian Schar’s header. A massive performance from the goalkeeper.

Ben White 7

Had a really tough afternoon up against Alexander Isak, who got the better of him a few times. Just about managed to come out on top, though.

Jakub Kiwior 8

Recovered really well from a nervy start when he thought he had given away a penalty. Coped well with the atmosphere and threat of Callum Wilson.

Gabriel 8

The Brazilian, like many of Arsenal’s defenders, has dipped in form recently, but he delivered today. Defended on the front foot and was dominant in the air.

Oleksandr Zinchenko 6

Looked good on the ball and brought some control to Arsenal’s game after a frantic start. Defensively, though, he was caught out too often and was taken off after an hour.

Martin Odegaard 8 | Star player

Scored the game’s opening goal with a brilliant finish from outside the box. Was, at times, unplayable in the first-half and should have scored another.

Jorginho 8

Struggled in the opening 10 minutes as Newcastle’s midfield started like a train. Bounced back really well and brought some calm to Arsenal’s midfield.

Granit Xhaka 8

Covered so much ground in the midfield and did loads of dirty work. Made two huge tackles - one in the first-half to stop Joelinton and another after the break when Willock was in.

Bukayo Saka 6

Missed a glorious chance to make it 2-0 in the first-half when through on goal. Wasn’t easy for him up against Dan Burn, who towered over him.

Gabriel Jesus 7

Had a tough afternoon up against Newcastle’s two huge centre-backs, but battled really well. Played a part in Arsenal’s second goal and linked the play nicely.

Gabriel Martinelli 7

Dropped for the win over Chelsea, but got his place back here and responded with a good performance. Setup the second goal after a great run. Almost scored himself, but hit the bar.
