Petr Cech’s calamitous day at the Emirates extended beyond the football pitch on Sunday as the goalkeeper crashed his car in the aftermath of Arsenal’s 4-3 loss to Liverpool.

Though there was little the 34-year-old could do about Philippe Coutinho’s free-kick opener or Sadio Mane’s spectacular fourth Cech had already endured a day to forget.

Both the goalkeeper and Nacho Monreal were caught badly out of position, Cech coming off his line rather than protecting his near post, for the second Liverpool from Adam Lallana, the crucial strike in an 18-minute salvo that saw Arsenal’s 1-0 lead become a 4-1 deficit.

To make his day even worse images emerged on social media in the hours after the game showing Cech’s car after it had hit a pillar in the underground car park.

Nobody was injured in the accident.

Reflecting on the match Cech had identified Coutinho’s crucial set-piece strike on the stroke of half-time, which came after 45 dominant minutes from Arsenal, as the crucial moment in defeat.

“I thought for the first 45 minutes we were excellent,” Cech said. “We played well, we got a goal, we had opportunities and we missed a penalty, but the reaction was great because we scored two minutes later. It was a perfect start for us.

How Arsenal forwards performed against Liverpool

“The moment shifted when they got an equaliser in the last minute of the first half. I thought if we concentrated and continued to play well we were going to win the game but, within a 15-minute spell, they scored three and decided the game.

“We started much slower in the second half. Once they got to 2-1 up, the game changed because they could wait to counter-attack and this is where they damaged us.

“We had a great reaction to come back into the game at 4-3, but we didn’t have enough time to equalise.”
