Arsene Wenger's injury problems increased on Wednesday night as Mohamed Elneny was substituted during the first half of Arsenal's EFL Cup quarter-final clash against Southampton.

With the Gunners 2-0 down to goals from Southampton duo Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand, Egypt international Elneny was replaced three minutes before the interval and headed straight down the tunnel at Emirates Stadium.

Wenger brought on Granit Xhaka for Elneny, though the Switzerland international has struggled to command a regular starting role for the Gunners this season.

Elneny joins a growing injury list for the north London club, with Wenger's midfield options limited by Santi Cazorla's absence due to an achilles problem.
