Arsenal legend Robert Pires has defended Arsene Wenger's "philosophy" and believes his countryman has invested well in the transfer market this summer.

The Gunners have won just one of their opening three Premier League games this season, which led large sections of the clubs fanbase to urge Wenger to invest in his squad further.

The Frenchman duly obliged by bringing in Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez prior to last week's transfer deadline, taking his total of summer signings to five.

Some fans remain unconvinced Wenger is the right man to take the club forward but Pires is adamant there is enough quality in the club's squad to challenge for the title, despite the fact Arsenal's transfer outlay may not be as large as some of their domestic rivals.

"I believe always in this team and this squad and of course in Arsene Wenger. I know a lot of fans are particular about Arsene. But this is our philosophy," Pires told Goal.

"We spent a lot of money, maybe not as much as Man United, Man City or Chelsea.

"But I think the quality is there. This is my opinion, but when you see all the names at Arsenal, the quality is unbelievable.

"Believe me, because sometimes I’m training with the guys, and the team is very, very good. We need maybe a bit of luck for this season, and I hope less injuries,” he added.

Pires has backed the new recruits to strengthen Arsenal as they go in search of the title but also conceded that the club's players need to have more faith in their own ability.

"He [Wenger]spent a lot of money, not like Man United or Man City. But he chose good players with good quality.

"I think some players like [Granit] Xhaka or [Shkodran] Mustafi can help this team. Because, actually, the team is really good, the quality is unbelievable.

"Maybe they need more confidence, but I believe in Arsenal this season,” he insisted.

Arsenal's next Premier League game is against Southampton on September 10 following the conclusion g of the international break with new signings Mustafi and Perez both expected to feature.
