Mikel Arteta ‘really happy’ with Alexandre Lacazette and expecting talks over Arsenal future ‘soon’

Mikel Arteta has declared himself “really happy” with striker Alexandre Lacazette, with a decision looming over his Arsenal future.

Lacazette’s contract is due to expire at the end of next season, meaning the Frenchman will be entering the final 12 months of his deal come the summer transfer window.

That means Arsenal must either sell or flesh out a new contract, or else risk losing the 29-year-old for nothing.

Lacazette enjoyed an excellent run of form around the turn of the year and though he appears to have lost his place in Arteta’s first-choice XI following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s return to form, the Spaniard says he still has a key role to play after scoring during Sunday’s win over Leicester.

“He’s got a contract with us,” Arteta said. “He played really well the other week. It’s exactly what we demand him to do.

“I’m really happy with him and the discussions about his contract will happen soon and we will see what happens.”
