Arsenal players chanted Danny Welbeck’s name in the dressing room after the striker had capped his first appearance in 10 months with the winning goal in his side’s 2-1 victory over Leicester City.

Welbeck had been a surprising presence on the bench, having played just sixty minutes of football for the under-21 side last week on the road to recovery from an operation on his left knee.

With almost the last touch of the game the 25-year-old headed Mesut Ozil’s cross beyond Kasper Schmeichel, securing a win that closed the gap on league leaders Leicester to just two points and reasserted Arsenal’s title credentials.

After a frustrating spell out of the side since April of last year Welbeck’s goalscoring return was hailed by his team-mates, who serenaded him on his return to the changing room.

“He got a great reception,” Wenger confirmed in the post-match press conference.

The manager confirmed that he had only decided on Saturday to include him in the squad and hailed the impact of the striker from the bench.

“Welbeck is a great player, you never know in our job if somebody else would have scored. Everybody’s extremely happy for him.

“He’s been out for ten months, that’s an eternity for a player. We worked very hard to bring him back so strong. Let’s not forget he’s not played one minute for us, just for the under-21s.

“He’s got a great mentality, he worked extremely hard to get back. That’s why he’s fit now.”
