What are you afraid of? The dark? Spiders? Beloved children’s television characters from the 1980s?

If you answered the latter then you are Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, who has revealed that he was terrified of ALF the Alien when he was 10 years old.

For most youngsters ALF – an acronym for Alien Life Form – was a friendly creature who lived in the Tanner family’s garage. For Giroud, the stuff of nightmares.

He told Arsenal’s matchday programme: “This is so funny, but my brothers are older than me – I was the youngest, and they used to tease me about a kids TV character called Alf.

“Do you know him? Alf the Alien, my God so ugly and I was so scared of him. My brothers used to say, ‘Be careful, Alf is going to get you tonight.’ They went too with it!”

Will Jan Vertonghen don an alien mask during today’s derby in an attempt to get inside his opponent’s head? We’ll find out very soon…
