Arsenal success will be sweeter as we don't have a wealthy benefactor, says club's commercial chief

Arsenal will get more satisfaction from winning trophies than big-spending Premier League rivals such as Chelsea and Manchester City due to the club's financial model, according to the Gunners commercial chief.

Tom Fox, Arsenal’s chief commercial officer, says victory will be 'sweeter' when the club's eight year trophy drought ends as it will not have been powered by the funds of a mega-wealthy owner.

Speaking to Marketing Week, Fox stated: "When we win, we will win on the back of our own effort, on the back of our own hard work and revenue that we as a club generate based on our power as a global brand. We won’t win on the back of a wealthy benefactor reaching into his pocket and solving the problem that way.”

Fox, who joined Arsenal in 2009, said that the club had been determined to build a financially stable brand in an era of cash-rich tycoon owners - and this approach was welcomed by supporters.

“We believe, and I think our fans believe, that success earned in the way that we’re going about it, in a very difficult landscape and a very challenging business, is the sweeter victory," he added: “We don’t exist for commercial purposes, we exist as a football club, to play football matches, to win and to make our fans feel proud.”
