Arsenal team news: Mikel Arteta hoping Kieran Tierney, Mat Ryan return before Aston Villa trip

Mikel Arteta is hoping Arsenal can get Kieran Tierney and Mat Ryan back in training before Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa.

The Gunners are in need of a boost ahead of their trip to Villa Park following a 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Tuesday night.

Arsenal had two players sent off during the loss at Molineux, with Bernd Leno and David Luiz both shown straight red cards.

It means Arsenal must call upon Alex Runarsson or Mat Ryan, who signed on loan from Brighton, in goal.

Ryan has been struggling with a hip injury, but Arteta is hoping he could return to training soon.

“He had a muscular issue in the last few days and he hasn’t been able to train,” he said. “Hopefully we can get him back in the next few days.”

It is the same story with Tierney, who missed Tuesday’s loss to Wolves due to discomfort in his lower leg.

“He wasn’t close at all [to play against Wolves],” said Arteta. "Hopefully in the next few days he will feel much better and will come in the team and help us in this moment when we have so many games.”
