Southampton are pushing to wrap up a loan deal for Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

The 23-year-old has struggled for action recently at Emirates Stadium and is attracting interest from a number of clubs.

West Brom are keen on Maitland-Niles, who can operate at full-back too, but Southampton are leading the way.

The club could offer the England international more regular football ahead of this summer’s rescheduled Euros.

Asked about any incomings before the transfer window shuts on Monday, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “Still possible yes.

“We still have a few days to go. We hope that we get another signing here, maybe on loan until the summer. This is an opportunity we have yes.”

Arteta was quizzed about Maitland-Niles’ lack of football on Thursday and said: “Yes, it is a concern when there is international football involved as well and the chance to reach that opportunity.

“I understand that Ainsley wants more minutes and what he needs to do is fight, train and challenge his teammates and show us that he can be one of our starters.”
