Arsenal v Bayern Munich: the key battles

19 February 2013

Arsenal take on German giants Bayern Munich in the first leg of the last 16 of the Champions League at the Emirates Stadium tonight.

Here are some of the key battles where the match could be won and lost.

PER MERTESACKER v MARIO MANDZUKIC

Mertesacker will be no stranger to the attacking prowess of Bayern, having joined Arsenal from the Bundesliga where he had spells with Hannover and Werder Bremen. The 6ft 6ins German centre-half will need all of that experience to help shackle Croatia forward Mandzukic, who has netted four times in Bayern's last five games.

JACK WILSHERE v BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER

Wilshere has wasted little time in getting back to his industrious best following a long injury lay-off. The 21-year-old England international has become the driving force at the heart of the Gunners side, just as Schweinsteiger is for Bayern, with both looking to maintain the supply line from defence to attack.

OLIVIER GIROUD v DANIEL VAN BUYTEN

France international Giroud has settled quickly following his summer move from Montpellier with 14 goals for Arsenal but he has only scored once in European competition. Giroud, often likened to a typical old-fashioned English centre-forward, will be closely guarded by Belgian defender Van Buyten, who had a short loan spell at Manchester City in 2004.
