Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has to prove himself at Bournemouth like any other player, according to Cherries manager Eddie Howe.

Wilshere has long been heralded as one of England's most gifted players but injury has restricted his progress at the Emirates Stadium in recent years.

And, with competition for places at Arsenal set to be fierce this term, the England international has moved to the South Coast in an effort to secure regular game time.

The 24-year-old made his first appearance for Bournemouth in Warren Cummings' testimonial at the Vitality Stadium this afternoon but Howe is adamant Wilshere is not guaranteed to play and will have to prove his worth like the rest of the squad.

"Like any player he'll have to go and prove himself to get into the first XI. But with his work ethic and undoubted talent I'm sure he will.

"He's a very talented player. You can see that. Hes been very good, very positive," Howe told Sky Sports when asked how Wilshere had settled into training.

"He was very keen to get on the pitch today and that bodes very well."

Wilshere is set to compete for a place in Bournemouth's side with the likes of Dan Gosling, Harry Arter and Andrew Surman.

The midfielder is expected to make his competitive debut for the club when Howe's side face West Brom on September 10 following the conclusion of the international break.

Wilshere may have left Arsenal in the search of first-team football but Paul Scholes fears the midfielder has "set his sights too low" with Bournemouth.
