Arsene Wenger among favourites to replace Sam Allardyce as next England manager, with David Beckham, Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho outsiders

Standard Sport28 September 2016

Sam Allardyce's reign as England manager came to a stunning end on Tuesday as the 61-year-old and the FA mutually agreed to terminate his contract after just 67 days.

Allardyce - whose England tenure amounted to just one game - was secretly filmed by the Daily Telegraph's investigations team in August and appeared to tell the group claiming to represent a Far East business that there are ways around rules prohibiting third-party ownership of players.

The former West Ham boss claimed on Wednesday morning that 'entrapment has won on this occasion', while the FA have placed Gareth Southgate in charge of the men's senior team for four games as the search for a new manager begins.

Standard Sport understands that Arsenal are set to face a renewed battle to keep Arsene Wenger with the FA expected to launch a fresh approach to appoint the Frenchman, and the Gunners boss has been priced at a strong 8/1 by BetVictor to take over on a permanent basis.

Selected odds (BetVictor)

Gareth Southgate: 11/8

Steve Bruce: 3/1

Glenn Hoddle: 8/1

Eddie Howe: 8/1

Arsene Wenger: 8/1

Alan Pardew: 10/1

Jurgen Klinsmann: 16/1

Harry Redknapp: 25/1

Slaven Bilic: 25/1

Jose Mourinho: 33/1

Sir Alex Ferguson: 33/1

Jurgen Klopp: 33/1

Rafa Benitez: 33/1

David Beckham: 66/1

Steven Gerrard: 66/1

But while Wenger is among the favourites for the role, he may face competition from Crystal Palace's Alan Pardew (10/1), Bournemouth's Eddie Howe (8/1), Glenn Hoddle (8/1), Steve Bruce (3/1) and clear favourite Southgate (11/8), who now has four games to prove he can lead the Three Lions full-time.

Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp lies at 25/1, while BetVictor have priced Sir Alex Ferguson at 33/1 to make a spectacular comeback from retirement and work his Manchester United magic with England.

Allardyce's departure comes at a particular tricky time for the FA given that managers with elite experience such as Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Rafa Benitez (all 33/1) have all found jobs at English clubs in the recent past.

And while it's safe to assume that the FA already have a shortlist of suitable candidates in mind, BetVictor have cheekily priced former England captain David Beckham and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard at 66/1 to take on the hotseat.
